Summer Lawn Care Tips:
August is a critical month for lawns in our area. Here are some recommendations to keep your landscape healthy through the rest of summer and into fall:
- Mowing Height: Raise your mowing height during peak summer heat. Keep Bermuda at 1.5–2 inches and Zoysia at 2–2.5 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture, and reduces stress on roots. Never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single cut.
- Watering Deeply and Infrequently: Water 2–3 times per week rather than daily, applying about 1 inch of water per session. Early morning watering (before 10 AM) reduces evaporation and helps prevent fungal issues. Avoid watering in the evening.
- Watch for Brown Patch: Hot, humid nights create ideal conditions for brown patch fungus, especially in fescue lawns. Look for circular tan or brown patches with a darker border. If you see symptoms, apply a fungicide labeled for brown patch and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen now.
- Hold Off on Fescue Fertilization: Do not fertilize fescue lawns in August — heat stress makes it counterproductive and can burn turf. Wait until late September or October when cooler temperatures return before aerating, overseeding, and fertilizing fescue.
- Warm-Season Grasses (Bermuda/Zoysia): These grasses are in their prime right now. A light application of a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 16-4-8) in early August can support healthy color and growth. Stop all fertilization by September 1st to allow the grass to harden before dormancy.
- Summer Weed Control: Crabgrass and other summer annuals are actively spreading seed. Spot-treat with a post-emergent herbicide rated for your grass type. Keeping your lawn thick and well-watered is the best long-term defense.
